Getting To The Point – Tips

The Major Parts of an Electrical Panel

It is important for you to have an understanding on how the electrical service panel works as before you start doing other electrical works in the house. The electrical service panel allows to break the circuit of the current flowing the parts that you want to work on, so that that you can do it safely. Alternative, the main electrical service box is called a load center.

In the main electrical service panel, power coming from the utility is distributed to various branches connected to various appliances, and outlets in the home. Again depending on the level consumption of power and power distribution network in the home, there can be need for additional smaller panel.Besides the main electrical service panel, then can be a small electrical panel, just in case the area of power utilization is large. A more conspicuous part of it is the door which when you open, you get access to the circuit breakers for repairs or replacements.

The whole circuit breaking part composed of one main circuit breaker and some more smaller ones whose number depends of the number of branches involved in the whole system. As you open the door of the panel, what you will see first are the main circuit breaker owing to its size and conspicuous positioning, which is normally at the top, and sometimes at the bottom or the sides. Its function is to control power going to various branches branch circuit breakers.

A part of the main circuit breaker are two black service wires, which are otherwise known as hot bus bars, which enter it through the sides. The main circuit breaker has another function of positioning the wires, so that they can supply electricity to the rest of the circuits. Again, there are other two wires which come out of the main circuit proceeding to the various destinations.

Then the effect of current flow is realized in various outlets and appliances such as in lighting, heating, upon the two wires leaving the main circuit breaker. There are also neutral bus bars which are connected with the two smaller neutral wires leaving the main circuit breaker. The whole circuit will get completed when the main electrical service panel is connected by the two main neutral bus bar, before extending it to the main power grid.

Also, the neutral bus bars connected to the ground will get connected to the main electrical service panel at the main bonding point known as a jumper. There is another current connection, which is the last one, involving a copper wire connected to a metal rod in the ground from the neutral wires, whose purpose to take control of any stray currents which might be as a result of over flow of current.

Alternatively, there can be a separate ground connection of a ground bus bar. The separate connection involves, electrically linking the ground wire with the neutral wire.

A thorough understanding of the electrical panel will enable you to do your assignment safely.
