Everything About Google Penguin

The codename for update in Google’s algorithm is called Google Penguin which was first announced on April 24, 2012. This update is focused to decrease search engine rankings of the websites that have violated Webmaster Guidelines set by Google by making use of now declared black hat SEO techniques, which involved in increasing the website’s ranking artificially by manipulating the links pointing to the page. Typically, these tactics are described as link schemes.

As what estimated by Google, the Penguin will likely affect 3.1 percent of search queries in English, around 3 percent of queries in languages similar to Chinese, Arabic and German and a bigger percentage of it is highly spammed languages. On the 25th of May 2012, Google has yet again revealed another Penguin update called Penguin 1.1. With regards to this update, it’s about to affect around less than 1/10 of a percent of the English searches.

Guiding principle for the said update was made to penalize the websites that are using manipulative techniques in order to achieve a higher ranking on search results. Pre-Penguin web pages are often using negative link building techniques for them to get high rankings and traffic. It’s meant that content was key and those that have excellent content will be recognized while those with spammy or little content would be penalized and receive no benefits or ranking as soon as the Penguin was introduced.

Allegedly, there are several sites that lost their search rankings on Google for utilizing specific keywords during the rollouts of Penguin and Panda. Specifically, Google has mentioned that doorway pages which are created to attract search engine traffic contradicts the webmaster guidelines.

And in January of the same year, so-called Page Layout Algorithm Update or also known as Top Heavy Update was released, which targets websites with too little content or too many advertisements above the fold.

Around .3 percent of queries were affected on the release on Penguin 3 on October 5, 2012. The Penguin 4 or also known as Penguin 2.0 was introduced on May 22, 2013 and has affected 2.3 percent of queries while Penguin 5 or Penguin 2.1 was presented on October 4, 2013 and affects approximately 1 percent of queries. According to rumors, Google is planning to release Penguin 3.0 on 18th of October 2014 which was then confirmed by Google’s Pierre Farr that the new update comes without signals added.

September 23, 2016, Google has announced that Google Penguin is part of core algorithm. With this, the update will be real-time or in other words, websites are evaluated in real time and will decrease or increase in rankings in real time as well.

If you want to ensure high ranking of your website, only follow the guidelines set by Google.
